A christening is one of the most photographed days in a Cypriot family. The godparent holding the baby, the first bath in the font, the grandparents in the front row, the little ones running around the churchyard, then the long table at the reception. Everyone has a phone out.
The usual next step is a WhatsApp group: "Send all your photos here!" It works, sort of. A week later the photos are scattered, blurry and lost between voice notes and "congratulations" messages.
Here is a calmer way to collect every christening photo.
Why a WhatsApp group is not ideal
- Photos are compressed. By default WhatsApp makes photos smaller to send them faster. The sharp photo your cousin took on a new phone arrives soft and grainy.
- Videos get cut or shrunk. Long videos of the ceremony are often too big to send in full.
- Everything is buried in chat. Photos sit between messages, stickers and replies. Finding the one of the godmother with the baby takes a lot of scrolling.
- Everyone sees everyone's number. A group of 80 guests shares 80 phone numbers, including people who barely know each other.
- Not everyone is in it. Older relatives, guests from abroad and the friend who changed numbers are left out.
- Saving them is a chore. Downloading hundreds of photos from a chat, one by one, is nobody's idea of fun.
A better way: one album and a QR code
With an event album like Kukuva, guests scan a QR code or open a link and add their photos and videos straight to one album. There is no app to install and no sign-up. It works on any phone, including iPhone HEIC photos, Live Photos and 4K video.
Guests can also leave a written wish for the baby, and on the Pro package a voice message — a lovely keepsake to read together when the child is older.
Step by step
1. Create the album a few days before
Set up the event in a few minutes. Pick the colours, a cover photo and a welcome screen. Choose a simple link name, like album.kukuva.cy/baptism-of-eleni.
Think about the timing. On the free package, uploads are open for 3 hours from the start of the event. A christening with a church service and a reception often runs longer, and photos keep arriving the next day. The Plus package keeps uploads open for 9 days, which suits most christenings.
2. Put the QR code where guests will see it
- On the μαρτυρικά. Add a small card with the QR code to the christening favours. Every guest takes one home, so the code goes home with them too.
- On the tables at the reception. Print the table cards from the QR designer.
- At the entrance with an A4 poster.
- In the invitation, if you send one by message or by post.
Your logo is optional on the printouts, so the cards can match your theme.
3. Ask guests to respect the service
Inside the church, the priest decides what is allowed. Some prefer no photos during the sacrament itself. Gently ask guests to keep phones down at the important moments and share their photos afterwards. The album is open for days, so there is no rush.
4. Ask a godparent or friend to remind people
A short reminder at the reception helps. "Scan the QR code on your table and add your photos of the baby" is enough. Set a photo challenge or two, like "a photo with the godparents" or "the baby's best smile".
5. Show the photos at the reception
If the venue has a TV or projector, put up the live photo wall. Guests see their photos appear within seconds, which encourages everyone to share. You can approve each photo before it appears on the wall, so nothing surprising ends up on the big screen.
6. Keep the album private
A christening is a family event and the photos show a small child. Kukuva gives you simple controls:
- protect the album with a password
- make it upload-only, so guests can add photos but not browse everyone else's
- turn off downloads for guests
- hide or delete any photo (deleted items stay in a bin for 30 days in case you change your mind)
Location data is removed from shared photos, and files are stored in the EU.
7. Download everything when it is over
After the christening, download all the photos and videos as one ZIP. On Plus and Pro you get the originals, not compressed copies. Keep them on your computer and in a backup, ready for the baby's first photo book.
A gentle tip for grandparents
Some older relatives may not be sure how to scan a QR code. Most phone cameras do it automatically — point the camera at the code and tap the link that appears. If that does not work, share the link by message. It opens the same album, in Greek, English or Russian.
Which package fits a christening?
- Free (€0, no card) works for a small, short gathering: 150 uploads, open for 3 hours, kept for 14 days.
- Plus (€49 + VAT) suits most christenings: 400 uploads, open for 9 days, kept for a year, original quality and download all.
- Pro (€99 + VAT) is for big christenings: unlimited uploads, open for 30 days, kept for 2 years, voice messages and frames around photos.
It is a one-off payment per event, not a subscription, and you can upgrade at any time, paying only the difference.
